Detectives have recovered a firearm believed to have been stolen from an Officer in Charge of a Police Station (OCS) in Vihiga during a robbery in Kasarani.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) revealed that the incident occurred on December 21, 2023. The OCS, while on patrol, was reportedly attacked by a gang who then made off with his firearm.
According to the DCI report, the OCS was ambushed by the gang while he was parking his car in Majengo market, Vihiga. They assaulted him with daggers and fled the scene, leaving him injured.
The gang managed to escape with the OCS’s Jericho pistol, which was loaded with 15 rounds of ammunition.
“After days of surveillance, detectives from the DCI Operations Directorate swiftly responded to an intelligence report received through the Fichua kwa DCI hotline by an anonymous caller,” the statement read.
The anonymous caller reported sighting a suspicious car occupied by three armed individuals in Mwiki.
“Upon approaching the scene cautiously, the officers identified the suspects as the same individuals who had previously evaded multiple police operations after carrying out attacks in the capital,” the DCI report stated.
When ordered to surrender, two of the suspects fled while the third allegedly brandished a firearm in confrontation with the detectives. He was fatally shot during the confrontation, while his accomplices escaped to a crowded shopping center where they are believed to be in hiding.
Upon searching the suspect, a Jericho pistol was found in his possession by the DCI Operations team who were tracking them down.
The vehicle used by the suspects was impounded, along with other items found concealed within it.
The body of the deceased suspect has been taken to the City Mortuary pending identification, according to the police.
