A court in Kirinyaga has decided to postpone the ruling on the bond application of John Muriithi, the owner of the bar where 17 individuals tragically lost their lives after consuming illicit brew.

The court stated that the decision will be made after hearing from witnesses identified by the prosecution team within the next 60 to 90 days.

Muriithi, represented by his lawyer Kemunto Magara, had applied for bond in the case where he faces charges including causing the death of 17 people at Kangai village and stealing exhibits from Kiamaciri Police Station.

However, Kerugoya High Court Judge Richard Mwongo denied Muriithi’s bond application, citing concerns that the seven witnesses lined up by the prosecution, all of whom are blind, could be easily influenced.

Initially charged alongside Muriithi were his brother Anthony Muthee, Muiguru bar owner Lydiah Wanjiru, and several police officers.

While some have been released on bond, the court has deferred Muriithi’s bond decision pending further hearings.
