Members of a Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) Church in Kisii are in disbelief after a gang raided the church at night and stole holy communion wine.
Ben Mongeri an elder at the church said the suspected criminals also made away with items used to serve wine during holy communion service.
Likewise, other items including musical equipment, flasks, cups and basins were reported missing after the incident.
According to Mongeri, the thugs may have raided the church to look for money given for offertory, and failed as the church leaders did not keep cash in church.
“We suppose they were ransacking the coffers looking for offering and when they couldn’t get it, they opted for the items,” Mongeri stated.
According to the elders the thieves are suspected to have broken into the church on Tuesday, April 9, by smashing a window. They then ransacked the cupboards inside the church, taking valuable items with them.
On Wednesday, a resident who was passing by the church noticed the smashed class and broken windowpanes and notified the church elders.
“A passerby was drawn to some shiny material at the back of the church which turned out to be windowpanes that were smashed by the criminals who tried to gain entry,” stated an elder.
Masaba South Police Commander Sammy Gitonga stated that investigations into the incident had begun.
“The incident has been brought to our attention and investigations are now underway, “he said.
