Police in Suba South have initiated investigations into the tragic killing of a woman by her ex-husband amidst a custody dispute over their children.
Winnie Auma, aged 30, was brutally attacked with a machete on Wednesday morning in Mwirendia village, Kaksingri West location. The assailant, her former husband, subsequently surrendered to the authorities.
The couple had separated three years prior due to domestic conflicts. Following their separation, Auma remarried and relocated approximately 15 kilometers away from their previous residence. However, she took two of their children with her, leaving the suspect with custody of the remaining three.
The fatal altercation occurred when Auma returned to retrieve the other three children from her ex-husband’s care. Tragically, she sustained severe injuries to her head and had both hands severed, resulting in her immediate death.
Following the horrific incident, the suspect voluntarily surrendered himself and the murder weapon, a machete, to Gingo Police Post, confessing to the crime. He was promptly arrested and detained at the police post before being transferred to Magunga station for further questioning.
Witnesses to the incident revealed that the couple had been embroiled in a prolonged dispute over the custody of their children.
Authorities also disclosed that Auma had sought assistance from a children’s officer in Suba subcounty to secure custody of her remaining children. However, the suspect reportedly sent the officer away, exacerbating the custody battle.
