Nyaribari Chache Member of Parliament Zaheer Jhanda has introduced a bill in parliament aimed at criminalizing the sale and use of shisha and vape products.
He contends that these items contribute to the drug epidemic plaguing the country, particularly among the youth. Jhanda emphasized the need to outlaw shisha and vape nationwide, citing the detrimental effects of drug and substance abuse on the younger generation.
“I have proposed an amendment in the National Assembly whereby we will criminalise the use of Shisha and vape. Anybody found smoking Shisha, in possession of Shisha or anyone found vaping or selling at any outlet, you are no different from any other person that will be found using or selling cocaine or heroine,” Jhanda said.
Expressing concern over the widespread consumption of alcohol and drugs among young men, Jhanda highlighted the negative impact on their ability to fulfill responsibilities at home. He stressed the importance of addressing this issue to safeguard the future of the youth.
Jhanda proposed stringent measures against entertainment establishments selling shisha, suggesting a two-year ban and revocation of operating licenses for violators. Additionally, he announced plans for Parliament to establish a hotline for citizens to report individuals and venues involved in the sale and use of shisha.
These efforts align with recent remarks by President William Ruto, who discouraged the use of shisha during an Iftar meeting with Muslim brethren. Ruto emphasized the presence of drug substances in shisha and urged people to abstain from it to avoid addiction.
