Police at Malaba station in Teso North, Busia County, have intercepted a significant haul of contraband, including 18 kilograms of marijuana (bhang) and 10 liters of chang’aa, a local illicit brew.
The illicit substances were reportedly being transported from Uganda to Kayole in Nairobi.
The operation, which took place on Wednesday, resulted in the arrest of three individuals, including an elderly woman believed to be the mastermind of the illegal trade, along with two middle-aged men. The arrests followed a tip-off from vigilant members of the public who noticed suspicious activity.
“At around 1pm, officers got a tip-off that there was a matatu transporting bhang and they responded swiftly and managed to intercept one matatu from Eldoret Shuttle Sacco,” said Matiku.
Teso North OCPD Joseph Matiku confirmed the incident, stating that the suspects were found in possession of the illegal substances. They are currently assisting the police with further investigations.
This interception underscores ongoing efforts to combat the proliferation of illicit drugs and substances in the country. It comes amidst heightened scrutiny and enforcement measures aimed at curbing drug trafficking and substance abuse.
OCPD Matiku reiterated the police service’s commitment to intensifying the fight against drug trafficking. He emphasized that the government will continue to conduct thorough inspections of vehicles accessing the border areas to prevent the smuggling of illicit substances. Such proactive measures are crucial in safeguarding communities and maintaining public safety.
