Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader Raila Odinga has summoned the party’s Central Management Committee to discuss the upcoming grassroots elections and internal succession plans.
The meeting is slated for Wednesday, April 3, 2024, at Raila Odinga’s office in Capitol Hill, Nairobi.
Originally scheduled for December 2023, the party elections were postponed. The Central Management Committee, composed of 12 members with substantial decision-making authority, is tasked with deliberating on key matters concerning the party before presenting recommendations to broader party committees.
Among the pivotal decisions expected from this meeting is whether to defer the party elections once more.
Simultaneously, the meeting aims to chart a path forward regarding succession within the party, particularly in the event that Raila Odinga secures the African Union Commission job. Several party stalwarts have expressed interest in assuming the leadership mantle.
Recent endorsements of former Mombasa governor Hassan Joho by Coast leaders prompted a cautionary remark from Raila Odinga. Addressing supporters in Malindi, Kilifi County, on Sunday, March 31, 2024, Raila warned against regional endorsements, fearing that such actions could fracture the party.
Raila emphasized the importance of unity within the party, stressing that divisive campaigns based on regional affiliations could weaken ODM. While Coast leaders advocated for Joho’s candidacy, Raila urged them not to solely consider regional ties in their decision-making process.
However, within ODM ranks, opinions diverge on whether to proceed with the party elections amid concerns that a contentious electoral process could tarnish Raila’s image as he pursues the AUC position. Proponents of holding the elections argue that a phased approach over an extended period could ensure peaceful grassroots participation.
