The persistent heavy rains, now entering their third week, have wreaked havoc across the country, leaving numerous casualties and displacing hundreds of people.

By Monday night, six people had lost their lives

According to a statement released by the Kenya Red Cross on Monday, the rains have affected a staggering 23,336 households within the past day alone, with 10,144 households forced to evacuate.

The situation remains precarious in the 23 Kenyan counties where flooding has been reported since the onset of the rains.

The Red Cross has noted the destruction of 14 roads and damage to 18 schools within the last day. Tragically, the rains have claimed the lives of 4,795 livestock, and 206 businesses have been adversely affected. Furthermore, an estimated 27,716 acres of arable land now lie submerged under water.

Amidst this crisis, there have been commendable acts of bravery, with 188 individuals rescued across the country since the commencement of the rains. Notably, three individuals and their dog were saved in Joska after being stranded by the overflowing Athi River.

The overflowing Athi River has particularly impacted households in Machakos County’s Kinanie, Joska, and Kamulu areas.

Additionally, the Nairobi and Ngong Rivers have caused flooding in various neighborhoods, including Kibra, South C, South B, Mukuru Kwa Njenga, Viwandani, and Kilimani. The situation calls for urgent and concerted efforts to mitigate the effects of the flooding and provide assistance to those affected.
