The death toll from Friday’s tragic drowning incident along the Kwa Muswii River, which runs through the Kasikeu-Sultan Hamud road in Makueni County, has risen to nine as of Saturday.
Three additional bodies were recovered from the Kwa Muswii River in Makueni County, where a lorry carrying locals and ballast lost control on Friday. Makueni Deputy Governor Lucy Mulili informed reporters at Sultan Hamud subcounty Hospital that rescuers had saved 14 people and retrieved eight bodies.
Later, another body was recovered in the same area. Mulili mentioned that approximately 10 people are still reported missing.
She explained that the Red Cross and Makueni County disaster management officials had extended rescue operations to other rivers flowing into Kwa Muswii in an effort to locate those still missing.
The overall death toll from floods across the country has climbed to 82.
On Friday, three individuals drowned in Machakos after the swollen Tindanda River swept away their vehicle. Among the victims were a man, his wife, and their neighbor. They were washed away by floods while returning home from Yaitha Market.
One person remains missing from the incident.
The heavy rainfall experienced in several counties has left hundreds of people feeling bewildered and desolate, with no hope for tomorrow. Women, children, and the elderly are left without shelter in this harsh cold weather.
In Mororo village, Tana River, residents have been forced to relocate and set up camp next to the highway in search of safety as floods continue to inundate their homes.
