The Ministry of Education has announced changes to the dates for the half-term break in the second term of the academic year. Initially set for June 20 to 23, the half-term break will now take place from June 26 to June 28, according to a circular dated May 24 addressed to all County Directors of Education.
The decision to revise the half-term dates was made in response to the disruptions caused by delayed school openings. The circular highlighted that all learners in boarding schools are expected to report back on June 30, 2024.
Acknowledging the potential impact on planned activities and schedules, the ministry emphasized the need for adjustments due to the changes.
The alteration in the academic calendar stems from the postponement of school openings, initially scheduled for April 29, due to flooding. Consequently, most schools resumed classes from May 13, a delay of two weeks.
Regarding concerns about compensating for lost instructional time, Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu announced on May 9 that the duration of the second term would be extended, although the specific period of extension was not disclosed.
