Aldai MP Marianne Kitany is among the MPs who voted on Thursday to kick out Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mithika Linturi over the fake fertilizer scandal.
A total of 149 MPs voted in favour of the motion, while 36 voted against. Three MPs abstained.
Kitany and Linturi were at one time lovers but they fell out in 2016. They are currently in court fighting over various properties.
Earlier on Kitany became the subject of discussion in parliament as lawmakers debated on the impeachment motion against his ex husband.
Owen Baya, the Kilifi North MP wanted the motion dismissed since Kitany, Linturi’s ex-wife was one of the MPs who had appended their signatures to the motion.
According to Baya, the mere fact that Kitany and Linturi were embroiled in a bitter fallout was an indicator of a conflict of interest.
“Standing Order 90 extensively relies on matters that are about the member who signs as Number 15 (Marrianne Kitany) on the list,” Baya stated during the proceedings.
“Honourable Speaker, interest should have been declared that the MP signing should have in this case declared interest in this because it refers to a personal relationship to the member and we either amend the list or declare that the list presented be expunged and this motion falls on its face.”
Ahead of Thursday’s impeachment proceedings, Kitany who also sits in the Agriculture Committee had asked Linturi to carry his own cross.
Speaking at Chepkunyuk in Nandi County during a thanksgiving ceremony of the election of Chepkunyuk Member of County Assembly John Tildai, Kitany said the issue of fake fertiliser is grave and should be addressed by the Agriculture CS.
“This issue of distribution of fake fertiliser is serious. Those in the ministry should come out clear and stop the blame games. Someone must carry his cross alone” the legislator two weeks ago.
“A senior official should take the responsibility. We shouldn’t be shifting the blame to tarnish other innocent leader’s names,” she affirmed.
