Detectives have recovered an AK-47 rifle stolen from a police officer in Mavoko in November 2025 following a shootout with suspected gangsters in Matungulu, Machakos County.

The operation resulted in the death of one suspected gangster, while another suspect managed to escape as detectives pursued the group.

The recovered rifle was loaded with 11 rounds of ammunition, raising concerns over the possible use of the firearm in other criminal activities.

Police Recover Phones and Robbery Tools

During the operation, detectives also recovered eight mobile phones, several balaclavas, crowbars and torches believed to have been in the suspects’ possession.

The recovered items have been taken as evidence as detectives continue investigating the gang and its alleged criminal activities.

Police are also pursuing the suspect who escaped during the shootout, with efforts underway to establish the identities and wider network of the suspected gangsters.
