At least seven people have died and more than 30 others sustained serious injuries after a 45-seater matatu lost control and rolled several times along the Emali–Ukia road in Makueni County.
The accident occurred in Ikangavya Sub-location, where the vehicle was carrying family members and friends travelling from Nthongoni in Kibwezi East to the Maumba area in Ikangavya for a dowry ceremony.
Matatu Lost Brakes
According to the Kenya Red Cross, the matatu reportedly lost its brakes while descending a steep section of the road, causing the driver to lose control before the vehicle rolled several times.
The crash left several passengers seriously injured, prompting an emergency response from authorities and rescue teams.
The injured victims were rushed to various health facilities, including Makueni County Referral Hospital and Matiliku Sub-County Hospital, where they are receiving treatment.
Authorities are yet to release further details on the circumstances surrounding the crash as investigations continue.
