The Kenya Red Cross has issued a warning to residents along the coastal strip to exercise caution as strong winds resulting from Tropical Storm IALY have begun to affect the area.
The Kenya Meteorological Department has forecasted that these winds could pose significant hazards to marine operations and coastal activities.
In a statement released on Tuesday afternoon, the Red Cross reported that the strong winds have already caused damage in Kilifi County, particularly in the Majajani area where a residential house lost its roof. Additionally, several electric posts were felled in Casuarina, Olimpia, Madunguni in Malindi, and Garashi in Magarini, with two posts catching fire at Jilore Trading Centre. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported so far.
The UK Met Office Storms information indicates that Tropical Storm IALY is passing closer to the Kenyan coast than any previous tropical storm, although it is not expected to make landfall. Despite this, the winds and associated sea conditions could still be hazardous.
The Kenya Meteorological Department has advised that strong winds are expected to affect the eastern half of the country on Tuesday and Wednesday. They have also issued a marine update for May 21-27, recommending that small boats and crafts avoid deep-sea areas due to “moderate to strong sea conditions” anticipated as a result of the storm. Winds are expected to be south-easterly at 10-30 knots over Kenyan waters, with wave heights ranging from 1.5 to 3.6 meters.
Residents and those involved in marine and coastal activities are urged to stay informed of the latest weather updates and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety.
