Former President Uhuru Kenyatta arrived in South Africa on Saturday to lead the African Union Election Observation Mission (AUEOM) for the country’s upcoming General Elections on May 29. He was welcomed at Oliver Tambo International Airport by High Commissioner Jane Ndurumo and officials from the African Union (AU).
South Africa’s General Elections will determine a new National Assembly and the Provincial Legislature in each of the nine provinces. The African Union Commission (AUC) recently appointed Kenyatta to head the AUEOM, recognizing his experience and leadership.
Election observation missions, such as the AUEOM, are crucial for maintaining the integrity of electoral processes. They provide impartial assessments and recommendations to ensure elections are transparent and credible. As the head of the mission, Kenyatta will lead a team of experts and observers tasked with monitoring various stages of the electoral process, including polling and result tabulation.
Kenyatta’s appointment underscores the continent’s commitment to upholding the principles of democracy and electoral integrity across Africa. His leadership in this mission is a testament to the shared goal of fostering transparent and credible elections throughout the continent.
