A high-stakes clash awaits this Sunday at Gusii Stadium as reigning champions Gor Mahia take on Shabana FC in a much-anticipated Kenyan Premier League encounter.
With both pride and points on the line, the 10,000-seat venue is expected to be a sea of green and red, packed with passionate fans eager to witness a thrilling contest between two footballing giants. But while excitement builds on the terraces, concerns are simmering behind the scenes.
Gor Mahia head coach Sinisa Mihic has openly criticized the congested fixture schedule, describing it as unfair to his team. The Croatian tactician expressed frustration over the tight turnaround following their recent FKF Cup quarterfinal clash against Kariobangi Sharks, which they won after a grueling contest at Dandora Stadium.
“It is unjust for my team to play two important games in two days,” Mihic lamented. “Why did we have to play on Thursday? Why not on Wednesday or Tuesday? It’s not ideal to play Thursday and then travel to Kisii for a Sunday fixture. Those scheduling these matches need to be more considerate.”
Mihic also highlighted the financial and logistical strain the packed calendar places on the club. Unlike well-funded European sides, he noted, Gor Mahia must manage travel and match preparations on a limited budget—a challenge compounded by five matches in just 15 days.
“We’re not like European teams with deep pockets. Even they complain about tight schedules. We’ve had to endure five matches in 15 days, and that’s tough on any squad,” he said.
On the pitch, fans can expect a tactical battle. Gor Mahia, renowned for their fluid attacking play, will aim to dominate possession and put early pressure on the hosts. The team is driven not just by current form but by a legacy of success that demands excellence.
Meanwhile, Shabana FC, coached by Peter Okidi, are plotting a major upset on home turf. With their fans behind them and the chance to derail the champions’ title ambitions, Shabana will be eager to rise to the occasion.
