NAIROBI, Kenya – Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Vice President McDonald Mariga and former Harambee Stars captain Victor Wanyama are mourning the passing of their mother, Mama Mildred Wanyama, who died peacefully on Saturday morning.
Mariga confirmed the heartbreaking news via his official X (formerly Twitter) account, writing:
“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, who left us peacefully today morning.”
While no details have been shared regarding the cause of death, the family noted that preparations for her burial are underway.
“We are currently making arrangements and will share more details soon,” Mariga added.
Mama Mildred was the wife of former AFC Leopards legend Noah Wanyama, and together they raised one of Kenya’s most iconic sporting families. Aside from Victor and Mariga, she was also the mother of Thomas and Sylvester, both of whom had professional football careers.
Her daughter, Mercy Wanyama, is a celebrated basketball player who has proudly represented Kenya in international competitions.
Mama Mildred’s influence on her children’s careers has been widely acknowledged, with many in the sports fraternity crediting her unwavering support and dedication to the family’s success.
Messages of condolence have begun pouring in from across Kenya’s sports community as the Wanyama family prepares to bid farewell to their matriarch.
