Airtel Kenya has added over 3 million new subscribers in the first quarter of 2025, surpassing Safaricom’s 1.7 million new customers, according to the latest Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) sector statistics report.

The data reveals Airtel experienced a 13.96% growth in mobile subscriptions, pushing its total customer base to 24.5 million as of March 2025. In contrast, Safaricom saw a 3.6% growth in the same period, bringing its total to 48.2 million subscribers, maintaining its dominance in the Kenyan market.

“We are deeply humbled by the support of over 24 million customers who continue to believe in us. This is not the destination; it is part of a longer journey,” said Airtel Kenya Managing Director Ashish Malhotra.

Malhotra emphasized Airtel’s continued commitment to investing in infrastructure and digital inclusion, especially in underserved regions.

Despite Safaricom’s continued market leadership, the significant rise in Airtel’s market share marks a potential shift in Kenya’s telecom landscape. Industry analysts say Airtel’s aggressive data pricing, improved 4G network, and customer-centric offerings may be attracting more users, especially Gen Z and urban dwellers.

In addition to Airtel and Safaricom, the CA’s report highlights the performance of other mobile operators in Kenya:

  • Equitel – 1.5 million subscribers
  • Telkom Kenya – 1.2 million subscribers
  • Jamii Telecommunications (JTL) – 0.7 million subscribers
