KISUMU & MERU COUNTIES, KENYA, JULY 1, 2025 – Police are investigating two separate fire tragedies in Kisumu and Meru counties that claimed the lives of a 51-year-old man and an 11-year-old schoolboy on Sunday night.
In Nyakach, Kisumu County, 51-year-old Joseph Odingo died after reportedly locking himself inside his home and setting it ablaze. Authorities say the motive remains unknown, and an investigation is ongoing.
The incident occurred on the night of June 30, and officers from the Nyakach Police Station confirmed the body had been taken to a local mortuary pending postmortem and forensic examination.

11-Year-Old Boy Dies in Meru House Fire
In a separate incident, an 11-year-old boy tragically died in a house fire in Mitunguu, Meru County, the same evening. The boy, a Grade Three pupil at Mitunguu Primary School, was sleeping at the time of the blaze.
Police said the cause of the fire is yet to be determined. The boy’s remains were transferred to the mortuary as investigations continue.

Authorities in both regions have launched parallel investigations to determine the causes of the fires. They are also appealing for any witnesses or family members to come forward with information that may assist in the probes.
