Kisumu, Kenya, August 19, 2025 – An 80-year-old man was brutally killed by his stepbrothers in Onono village, Kawino North Location, Kadibo Sub-County, following a heated land dispute.

The victim, identified as Mzee Barack Ochuka, succumbed to injuries after being viciously attacked with crude weapons. He sustained severe wounds to the head, back, and arms during the confrontation.

Stepson Injured in the Attack

According to a police report, the suspects—Lawrence Onyuka (38) and Tobias Onyuka (35)—also assaulted the deceased’s son, Calvin Ochieng, who had attempted to rescue his father.

Ochieng was stabbed in the chest and rushed to Nyang’ande Sub-County Hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment.

Mob Justice and Arrests

The violent incident sparked outrage in the village, leading to a mob retaliation against the suspects.

  • Lawrence narrowly escaped lynching and fled to Rabuor Police Station for safety.
  • Tobias, however, was caught and beaten by the public, sustaining serious head injuries.

Police later arrested both brothers, who are receiving treatment at Ahero Sub-County Hospital under police guard. Authorities have confirmed that the suspects will face charges once they are discharged.

Rising Cases of Land-Related Violence in Kenya

Land disputes remain one of the leading causes of violence in Kenya, often pitting family members against each other. According to a report by The Nation, unresolved inheritance cases and unclear land ownership structures continue to fuel such deadly conflicts.

Earlier this year, similar family-related land clashes were reported in Nakuru and Kakamega counties, underscoring the need for better conflict resolution mechanisms.

Authorities’ Next Steps

Police have assured the public that investigations are ongoing and that justice will be served. The incident has once again highlighted the devastating consequences of unresolved land wrangles within families.
