Nairobi, Kenya – Detectives from the Nairobi Region Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau have arrested Kenas Okello Oyugi, the alleged mastermind behind a high-profile theft targeting a Greek tourist visiting the Maasai Mara Game Park.

How the Theft Unfolded

The victim arrived in Nairobi on August 5, 2025. The following day, he travelled to Maasai Mara with his tour guide and an acquaintance he had met online, who introduced himself as “Jeremiah John.”

While at the park, “Jeremiah” disappeared, taking with him three debit cards, a mobile phone, and a Seiko Crystal wristwatch.

Shortly afterwards, €25,000 was withdrawn from the tourist’s bank account, prompting immediate police investigations.

Suspect Unmasked and Arrested

Forensic analysis revealed that “Jeremiah John” was a fake identity. The suspect’s true identity was confirmed as Kenas Okello Oyugi.

Detectives tracked him to his hideout, where he was arrested and found in possession of:

  • Multiple mobile phones
  • A Seiko Crystal wristwatch
  • KSh54,050 in cash
  • Cash in US dollars
  • A brand-new tour trek bicycle believed to have been bought with stolen funds

Police Warning to Tourists and Locals

The incident has raised concerns over tourist safety in popular destinations like Maasai Mara. The Kenya Tourism Board and police have urged visitors to verify the identities of travel companions and report any suspicious behaviour immediately.
