Safaricom Plc has announced that M-Pesa services will be temporarily unavailable on Monday, September 22, 2025, as the company carries out a scheduled system upgrade.

In a public notice, the telco giant said the maintenance window will run from 12:30 am to 3:30 am, during which all M-Pesa services, including airtime purchase, will be inaccessible.

“During the maintenance, all M-PESA services including airtime purchase shall be temporarily unavailable,” Safaricom stated. “The timing of this maintenance activity has been planned to result in minimal inconvenience to our customers.”

Why the Upgrade is Necessary

Safaricom emphasized that the upgrade is part of efforts to modernize and strengthen the 18-year-old M-Pesa infrastructure, ensuring customers enjoy safer, more secure, and worry-free digital financial services.

The company apologized for any inconvenience that may arise and thanked Kenyans for their continued trust and support.

About M-Pesa

Since its launch in 2007, M-Pesa has grown into one of the world’s most successful mobile money platforms, serving over 30 million active users in Kenya alone and millions more across Africa. The service has become central to Kenya’s financial ecosystem, enabling payments, savings, loans, and international transfers.
