A suspected thief was shot and injured after allegedly attacking a police officer during a dawn incident in Kibera, Nairobi.
According to Nairobi Police Commander Issa Mohamud, the confrontation occurred on Friday morning along Lindi Road, where two officers were conducting undercover patrols.
Police said the officers were ambushed by a group of about six men. During the attack, one of the suspects reportedly armed himself with a panga and slashed an officer on the left hand, sparking a struggle.
In response, the injured officer drew his firearm and shot the assailant in the left ankle, subduing him.
The situation quickly escalated as a crowd gathered at the scene, demanding the suspect’s release. However, additional police officers arrived in time to contain the situation and evacuate both the injured officer and the suspect to hospital for treatment.
Authorities confirmed that the suspect will be charged once he is discharged from hospital.
Police also recovered the panga believed to have been used in the attack, which has been secured as evidence.
Following the incident, police said they have intensified patrols in Kibera and surrounding areas in a bid to curb rising criminal activities.
