Congolese boxer Romeo Katompa has died following an alleged xenophobic attack in Johannesburg, South Africa, where he was reportedly burnt alive.

Katompa, who had lived in South Africa for several years, was married to a South African woman and had one child.

His reported death has sparked grief and anger among members of the Congolese community both in the Democratic Republic of Congo and across the diaspora.

Calls for investigation and justice

Following the incident, many Congolese nationals have demanded a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding Katompa’s death and called for those responsible to face justice.

The killing has renewed concerns over xenophobic violence targeting foreign nationals in South Africa, with activists warning that such incidents continue to threaten migrant communities.

Fears of rising tensions

The incident has also raised concerns that the attack could worsen diplomatic and social tensions, with fears it may trigger retaliatory actions against South African businesses and interests in other countries.

Authorities are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the alleged attack as calls for accountability continue to grow.
