Danish photojournalist Klaus Thymann has been arrested in Uganda, authorities confirmed on Tuesday, days after the country’s army chief ordered the shutdown of a leading independent media group.
Thymann, an award-winning journalist renowned for his climate and environmental reporting, was detained on Monday over alleged wildlife-related offences, according to local media reports.
The reports indicate that he had been meeting officials to discuss permits for his environmental work in the Rwenzori Mountains when he was arrested.
An official from the Uganda Wildlife Authority confirmed the arrest, saying investigations into the matter are ongoing.
Authorities have not disclosed the specific reasons behind his arrest or the nature of the alleged wildlife-related offences.
Last week, Thymann posted on X that he was experiencing difficulties obtaining a permit to work in Uganda despite being an accredited journalist.
The arrest comes amid growing scrutiny of media freedom in Uganda following recent actions by authorities against independent media outlets.
