A post-mortem examination has confirmed that youth mobiliser and Technical University of Kenya student Cecil Ouma died from a single gunshot wound to the chest, with the injury causing massive internal bleeding.
The autopsy was conducted by two pathologists representing both the government and Ouma’s family following the fatal shooting on June 30 along Nairobi’s Park Road, shortly after a government youth empowerment event in Kariokor.
Bullet Entered Through Arm Before Piercing Chest
According to the pathologists, the bullet first entered Ouma’s left forearm near the elbow before travelling into the chest cavity.
The projectile pierced his lungs, fractured his spine and eventually lodged behind the chest near the spinal region, causing fatal internal injuries.
The medical team concluded that the extensive internal bleeding resulting from the gunshot wound was the cause of death.
Bullet Retrieved for Ballistic Examination
During the post-mortem examination, doctors successfully recovered the bullet from Ouma’s body.
The projectile has since been handed over to investigators for ballistic analysis, while additional specimens were collected to assist in the ongoing investigation.
“This was a gunshot wound to the chest with massive internal bleeding. The bullet was retrieved from behind the spine and has been submitted for ballistic investigations. Other specimens have also been taken to complete the investigations,” one of the pathologists said after the examination.
The medical team said the findings have now been handed over to investigative authorities to determine the full circumstances surrounding the shooting.
Public Outcry Continues
Ouma’s death has sparked widespread public concern and renewed calls for accountability over the use of firearms by security personnel.
The incident occurred shortly after a government youth empowerment event and remains under active investigation.
Fikirini Pledges Cooperation
Meanwhile, Jacobs Fikirini has expressed condolences to Ouma’s family and apologized over the incident involving members of his security detail.
The Principal Secretary said he has already recorded a statement with police and pledged full cooperation with investigators. He also disclosed that seven individuals, including two officers attached to his office, have recorded statements as part of the ongoing investigations.
Authorities are expected to rely on the ballistic examination, witness statements and other forensic evidence to establish the circumstances that led to Ouma’s fatal shooting.
