Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has unveiled plans to construct a state-of-the-art garage to accommodate mechanics affected by the ongoing Nairobi River Regeneration Programme.

The proposed facility is expected to accommodate up to 1,200 vehicles and provide modern infrastructure designed to improve working conditions for mechanics while creating new business opportunities.

Speaking on Monday after holding separate meetings with representatives of Grogon mechanics and Central Business District (CBD) traders, Sakaja acknowledged that the regeneration works have disrupted businesses but maintained that the inconvenience is temporary.

He said the project is intended to deliver a cleaner, better organised and more economically vibrant Nairobi.

“We are planning to build a modern facility that will improve your working conditions, grow your businesses, and create more opportunities,” Sakaja said.

According to the Governor, the planned garage will feature vehicle showrooms, painting booths, car wash bays, training rooms, clinics, retail shops, kitchens and other support facilities aimed at enhancing the working environment for mechanics.

He noted that the project is part of the broader Nairobi River Regeneration Programme, a multi-sector initiative focused on restoring the Nairobi River while improving environmental conditions and public spaces.

Sakaja said the regeneration programme is also expected to unlock new economic opportunities along the river corridor by creating safer and more attractive spaces for businesses and residents.

The Governor assured traders and mechanics that the county government remains committed to engaging stakeholders throughout the implementation of the project to ensure affected businesses are supported during the transition.
