Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced that it will stop producing physical discs for all new games released on PlayStation consoles beginning January 2028, marking a major shift toward digital-only game distribution.
Under the new policy, all PlayStation games launched from January 2028 onward will be available exclusively in digital format through the PlayStation Store and participating authorized retailers.
The company clarified that the change will not affect games released before the January 2028 deadline. Existing titles will continue to be available on physical discs, allowing players to purchase and use them as before.
According to Sony, the decision was driven by the growing preference among gamers for digital downloads over physical media.
The company added that it will continue distributing digital games through the PlayStation Store and its network of authorized retail partners as it transitions fully to a digital-first model for future releases.
