Apple has added the iPhone X and 2018 15-inch MacBook Pro to its official list of obsolete products, ending repair and replacement-parts support for the two devices.
The move means Apple and its authorised service providers will no longer offer official repairs or supply replacement parts for the affected products.
What Apple’s Obsolete Classification Means
Apple classifies products as vintage when they have not been distributed for sale for more than five years but less than seven years.
Products become obsolete after more than seven years without being distributed for sale.
Once a device reaches the obsolete category, Apple generally stops hardware service and authorised providers can no longer order parts for repairs.
iPhone X Reaches End of the Road
Launched in 2017, the iPhone X was a major milestone in Apple’s smartphone lineup.
It was the company’s first iPhone to feature Face ID and an OLED display, while also introducing the now-familiar all-screen design with a notch.
The device has also reached the end of its major software support, with the iPhone X unable to officially upgrade beyond iOS 16.
2018 MacBook Pro Also Obsolete
The 2018 15-inch MacBook Pro has similarly been added to Apple’s obsolete products list.
The model was notable for being the first MacBook to feature Apple’s T2 security chip, which supports functions including Touch ID and secure boot.
The 2018 MacBook Pro has also reached the end of its major macOS support and is limited to macOS Sequoia.
Owners May Face Repair Challenges
Owners of the two devices will now have to rely on third-party repair providers for servicing.
However, obtaining replacement components could become increasingly difficult as official parts supplies decline.
The classification marks the end of an era for two products that played significant roles in Apple’s transition to its newer hardware designs.
