Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki has summoned editors of leading media houses to discuss the coverage of insecurity in the North Rift which has put the government under pressure in recent weeks from members of the public who think it is not doing enough.
The government is hoping that the meeting which is set to take place today in Nairobi will at least turn the tide and give it some breathing space after weeks of back-to-back coverage on killings in the North Rift.
“Kenya Editors’ Guild invites you to a Press Club with the Cabinet Secretary, Interior Ministry, where we shall interrogate the theme “ National Security: Emerging Threats and Opportunities for Kenyan Migrants,” says a letter sent to editors which sauce.co.ke has seen.
Kindiki has been instructed by President William Ruto to make sure that the insecurity in the North Rift is solved. Defence Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale has already gazetted the deployment of Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) to North Rift to contain banditry after President Ruto ordered a joint operation with the National Police Service.
Duale yesterday said KDF would help the National Police Service deal with the security emergency in Turkana, West Pokot, Elgeyo Marakwet, Baringo, Laikipia and Samburu Counties.
“PURSUANT to Article 241 (3) (b) of the Constitution of Kenya, 2010 as read with sections 31 (1) (a) and (c), 33(1) and 34 (2) of the Kenya Defence Forces Act, 2012, notice is given that on the 15th February, 2023, the Kenya Defence Forces shall be deployed in support of the National Police Service in response to the security emergency in Turkana, West Pokot, Elgeyo Marakwet, Baringo, Laikipia and Samburu Counties caused by rampant incidents of banditry,” reads the notice.
