The residents of Massol ward in West Pokot are up in arms after a herd of cows was shot dead allegedly by police officers at Kadengony along their border with Turkana.

Massol Ward Member of the County Assembly Aryong Lyoporn said the cows numbering about 300 were mowed by a hail of gunfire by uniformed men on Thursday.

“It’s very painful,” said MCA Lyoporna. “Ng’ombe ana makosa gani?”

The cows, which belonged to herdsmen from the Pokot community were grazing on disputed land when the incident happened.

“Who will help the common man if the security officers charged with overseeing security are committing such acts?”  Lyoporna posed.

The latest incident comes as the government steps up efforts to enhance security in the bandit-prone counties of Turkana, West Pokot and Baringo. Last Saturday, Interior CS Prof. Kithure Kindiki visited Baringo where he reiterated the government’s commitment to ensure security.
