Retired president Uhuru Kenyatta has convened a Jubilee delegates conference as the former ruling party continues to take a hit courtesy of leadership wrangles. In an advertisement placed in the dailies today, Uhuru has asked the party delegates to meet on May 22 at the Bomas of Kenya.
The agenda of the meeting will be reviewing, formulating and approving party policies, receiving status reports from the National Executive Committee and considering and approving any other matters.
Uhuru is currently struggling to control his party as two factions; one led by Kanini Kega and another one led by Jeremiah Kioni fight over Jubilee. On Wednesday the retired president stormed the party headquarters in Nairobi to stop its forcible takeover by rebel officials.
“Anyone who wants to leave a party can join another. We have no quarrel with anyone. We want to guard our party, and those who do not want, are free to leave,” he said.
“Let us maintain peace. Police officers have better things to do other than coming here to restore peace. We don’t have issues with anyone, our mandate is to maintain peace,” he stated.
This was the first time the retired President is engaging in a direct political activity involving his party since he handed over to Ruto, last September.
