Retired President Uhuru Kenyatta today resurfaced at the Jubilee party headquarters and asked Kenya Kwanza to respect them.
Uhuru condemned those seeking to cause chaos within the Jubilee regime.
“Anyone who wants to leave a party can join another. We have no quarrel with anyone. We want to guard our party, and those who do not want, are free to leave.
“Let us maintain peace. Police officers have better things to do other than coming here to restore peace. We don’t have issues with anyone, our mandate is to maintain peace,” he stated.
The Jubilee party is currently divided with some members led by its acting SG Kanini Kega having pledged to work with the government.
The other side is led by Jeremiah Kioni who strongly said the Jubilee party is in Azimio.
Supporters of the two camps today created a commotion forcing police officers to intervene. Uhuru said he came to shove up support for Kioni.
“When Kenyans made a decision last year, as leaders who were in power then, accepted that decision, move on and handed over power, we also want them to respect our rights as members of our party,” he said.
This was Uhuru’s first engagement with Jubilee Party, having steered from direct involvement. Defecting Jubilee members led by Kega and Sabina Chege (Nominated MP) had accused Uhuru of silence and failing to steer the party.
The former president condemned how the police handled the standoff at Jubilee party headquarters.
“You are throwing teargas at them so you can take the house by force that is not right,” Uhuru said.
Uhuru said that the place was a residential area and it was wrong for the police to lob tear gas at them.
“This is not right and it is not the law,” he said.
He called for peace and unity asking the police to respect the law and protect the public.
“This is not the first time we have seen such a scenario. Do the right thing. Please protect the lives of people to keep your job,” Uhuru said.
