The return of a man who had fled from his home in Kisii three years ago as a pauper only to return a week ago with a Toyota Landcruiser filled with goodies cracked open investigations into the disappearance of Treasury official Tom Osinde leading police to arrest two suspects.
Osinde’s decomposing body was found on Monday June, 29 at River Kuja in Migori county more than 12 days after he went missing.
Julius Mogoi, one of the suspects who was arrested yesterday from Nyakoe, Kisii was seen by witnesses driving Osinde’s black Toyota Land Cruiser merely two days before the vehicle was found abandoned in Transmara West, Narok County.
Osinde was traveling from Nakuru to Kisii before his mysterious disappearance on June 17. His car registration number KBZ 900R, a black Land Cruiser, was found vandalized in Kilgoris three days later.
Mogoi’s sudden return to Nyakoe, Kisii County, three years after fleeing the village, surprised residents who noticed an assortment of household goods inside the car. Mogoi was one of Osinde’s farm workers in Transmara, Narok county.
He had earlier claimed that his boss had sent him to deliver an undisclosed sum of money to a woman in Kericho. Mogoi, along with a group of friends visited his cousin in Kisii, where he bought them breakfast and had the car washed.
Police suspect that it was then that he went off Narok County to abandon the car, where it was ultimately discovered. With this information, police arrested Mogoi and Mugo Gathii another worker who is helping them with investigations.
Two individuals have been apprehended by detectives leading the investigation into the disappearance of former National Treasury employee Tom Osinde, who was reported missing on Sunday of last week.
Rongai DCIO Donnata Otieno has confirmed the arrest of the suspects, stating that they are employees of a farm located in Trans Mara West, Narok County.
“While searching the victim’s residence, we expanded our investigation to cover the farm, which spans over 10 acres. So far, we have combed through seven acres, but no significant findings have been recovered,” explained the DCIO.
“We currently have two suspects in custody, and they are cooperating with our ongoing investigation,” confirmed Otieno.
Regarding the recovery of Osinde’s black Toyota Land Cruiser last week, Otieno stated that the officers are continuing their thorough search of the 10-acre land where the vehicle was discovered, but there have been no signs of him thus far.
She emphasized the investigators’ unwavering confidence in finding the former Treasury employee, asserting that every effort will be made in the search, leaving no stone unturned.
“The victim is not only a public figure but also a human being, and our utmost priority is to safeguard lives and property. We will tirelessly search for and trace his whereabouts, whether he is deceased or alive,” declared Otieno.
“At this moment, we cannot confirm whether he is deceased. The suspects are being held on charges of abduction. We have been at the farm for nearly three hours, searching for any clues regarding his status, whether he is alive or not. We are exploring possibilities such as a potential grave or septic tank,” she explained.
