The National Basketball Association (NBA), headquartered in New York, is poised to establish an office in Nairobi this November.
This significant development was announced by State House spokesperson Hussein Mohamed on a Friday morning. It was revealed that Kenya had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the NBA, with President William Ruto present at the signing ceremony in New York, alongside Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba.
Mohamed emphasized that this agreement marks a pivotal moment for basketball in Kenya and will lead to the remarkable growth of the sport.
Additionally, the partnership aims to foster grassroots talent development through the Talanta Hela Initiative, including the training of teachers as certified basketball coaches and scouts.
Furthermore, the collaboration will result in the enhancement of local basketball infrastructure, encompassing the construction of basketball courts in schools and communities across the nation.
Mohammed highlighted this commitment, saying, “Development of Basketball infrastructure, including Basketball courts in schools, communities and neighborhoods, and an elite arena for hosting top-level competitions… NBA to open an office in Nairobi in November 2023 to coordinate all activities under the historic MoU.”
