Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is currently working towards reconciliation with his political rival, former President Uhuru Kenyatta.
This reconciliation effort comes in the wake of a falling out with some politicians from the Mt Kenya region.
During an appearance on Inooro TV on October 6, Gachagua expressed his intent to engage in a dialogue with Uhuru Kenyatta, aiming to foster unity within the Mt Kenya region as the 2027 General Election approaches.
Gachagua emphasized his call for restraint among his supporters, urging them not to attack the former head of state. Uhuru Kenyatta had faced intense criticism, including an incident involving the Northland City, following his declaration of support for former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
Gachagua, who aspires to establish himself as the key political figure in the region, stressed the importance of putting aside differences and healing the community from the rifts observed during past elections.
He expressed his newfound respect for Uhuru Kenyatta, despite their past conflicts, acknowledging that unity was the way forward.
“As Mt Kenya leaders, we have agreed not to be fighting him, and I am planning to hold talks with him. I have ordered everyone to respect him, and he is also doing good to keep his peace,” Gachagua stated.
Gachagua also touched upon Uhuru Kenyatta’s previous reentry into politics, suggesting it could have disrupted the government’s stability. He commended the former president for his recent decision to step back from active politics.
“He has done well by being quiet, and I thank him for that because when he had returned to politics, we felt the burden,” Gachagua noted.
Moreover, Gachagua hinted at the possibility of a future reconciliation symbolized by a ‘handshake,’ but he emphasized that the timing had to be right for such a gesture.
