Diani residents in Kwale County are gripped with fear as they face an alarming surge in violent crime carried out by juvenile gangs wielding machetes.

These gangs have been operating both under the cover of night and brazenly during daylight, targeting unsuspecting residents and business owners, particularly in poorly lit areas.

Armed with crude weapons, knives, and machetes, these gangs have wreaked havoc in recent months, breaking into shops and homes to steal electronics, money, and other valuables.

Despite the recent arrest of three suspects transporting stolen electronic gadgets on a motorbike, the machete-wielding youth continue to strike fear into the hearts of residents.

One victim, identified as CM, is currently recuperating after being assaulted by a gang of three individuals in the Msikiti Nuru area in Ukunda.

CM, a tuk-tuk driver, was ambushed at around 10 pm while returning home from work. The assailants brutally attacked him, leaving him slightly paralyzed and seriously injured.

They inflicted head injuries, stabbed him with a knife, and attempted to harm him further. Fortunately, CM managed to escape their clutches, preventing a potentially fatal outcome.

Additional victims, such as AW, a local vegetable vendor, and MK, another woman, have experienced similar violent encounters with these juvenile gangs.

They described being surrounded, threatened, and robbed, further highlighting the urgent need for action to address this growing menace in the area.

The residents of Diani are calling on security authorities to take effective measures to restore calm and safety to the area.

They expressed concerns that not all cases are being reported to the local police station, as some residents believe the police response has been inadequate.

Diani Police Station OCPD Francis Gachoki assured the community that progress has been made in curbing crime.

Several arrests have been made, and individuals are aiding in investigations and facing legal charges.

Gachoki encouraged residents to report crimes and visit the police station to identify recovered electronic items.

Kwale County Commissioner Michael Meru Mwangi declared that juvenile gangs and insecurity have been completely addressed, assuring the public that Diani and the entire county are now secure.

He emphasized that stringent security measures have been implemented and security forces are ready to combat any threats.

Mwangi warned youth against engaging in criminal activities and urged parents to take responsibility for their children, emphasizing the consequences for criminal behavior.
