Two Police Constables (PC), identified as Raphael Nzioka and Nancy Kerubu from Eastleigh North Police Station, have been arrested by detectives from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) for demanding a Sh100,000 bribe from a local businessman.
Their arrest followed allegations that the officers had unlawfully confiscated mobile devices valued at Sh300,000 from a mobile shop in the bustling Nairobi neighborhood of Eastleigh without proper justification.
According to an EACC source, the police officers then demanded a bribe of Ksh.100,000 from the shop owner to return the confiscated stock of mobile phones. In response, the trader sought the assistance of the EACC, leading to an investigation.
EACC detectives conducted an operation that culminated in the arrest of the two police officers while they were receiving the demanded bribe.
The officers were subsequently questioned at Integrity Centre Police Station and then taken to Kilimani Police Station for detention pending further processing.
EACC Spokesperson Eric Ngumbi confirmed the arrest and expressed concern over the rising number of complaints involving police officers engaging in extortion and bribery.
He noted that the trend indicated a shift from merely accepting bribes to extorting money from citizens who were not facing legitimate accusations of law violations.
Ngumbi called upon police commanders at all levels to take responsibility for ensuring that officers under their command refrain from such criminal and immoral acts.
