The Tragic Incident
According to a police report seen by reporters, Ouma had made a distressing call to a colleague who served as a police commander at the same station.
In the call, Ouma threatened to take his own life.
Responding swiftly to the alarming call, the police commander rushed to the scene, only to be met with the news that Ouma had already been rushed to Komarock Modern Hospital.
The situation took a darker twist when it was discovered that Ouma had also shot a 35-year-old man named Philip Muhavi Ayieka in the left foot. Ayieka was shot when he attempted to offer assistance to the troubled officer.

The tragic event has left many questions unanswered.
It remains unclear why Senior Officer Ezra Ouma resorted to taking his own life. Even more shocking is why he would try to harm others in the process. Police have initiated investigations into the matter, so as to try to understand the motive behind this distressing incident.

The Rising Mental Health Concerns
This incident, though tragic, is not isolated. Cases of police officers taking their own lives have been on the rise in recent years.
Experts have attributed this distressing trend to the immense pressure and challenging working conditions that law enforcement personnel often face. The demanding nature of their duties, coupled with prolonged exposure to trauma, can take a severe toll on their mental health.
Beyond the law enforcement community, the incident also highlights a broader concern regarding mental health in Kenya.
The country has witnessed an alarming increase in cases of suicide and murder in recent years. This points to a deteriorating mental health landscape. Addressing this issue is crucial not only for the well-being of law enforcement officers but also for the entire population.
Mental health is an area of massive concern across the world and Kenya is no exception. A staggering 1 out of 4 persons who seek healthcare in Kenya have a mental health condition.
Depression is common and there are increasing rates of substance and alcohol use disorders.
While the country does not currently have a specific budget for mental health, the good news is that Kenya established a Mental Health Taskforce last year. The taskforce has recently implemented a number of reforms to improve care for those with mental health conditions.
Mental health experts highly recommend seeking help whenever you experience any mental health issues.
