Pope Francis has called for prayers for Kenya as the country faces heavy floods. Expressing his concern, Pope Francis stated that he is praying for Kenyans who are suffering from the devastating effects of the floods, which have claimed about 200 lives.
“I’m spiritually close to the people of Kenya at this time when a severe flood has claimed many lives and destroyed vast areas. Let us pray together for all those who suffer the effects of this natural disaster,” the Pope said in a statement on X.
This appeal comes amidst the ongoing floods in the country, leaving behind a trail of destruction of lives and property. In Kitengela, residents were marooned by floods on Wednesday morning following heavy rains that pounded the city and its outskirts.
Many residents took to social media seeking assistance, while humanitarian organizations like the Kenya Red Cross swung into action to evacuate affected families. Some residents found themselves trapped in their homes as early as 2 am due to the flooding.
According to the latest information from the Kenya Red Cross, at least 11 people, six of them in critical condition, have been evacuated.
On Tuesday, President William Ruto announced that the floods had claimed over 170 lives. He and his Cabinet held a meeting that morning to devise measures to mitigate the effects of the torrential rains, which, in addition to claiming lives, have devastated property and livelihoods across Kenya.
