Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale has criticized Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, accusing him of interfering in Western Kenya politics.
Speaking during a nationwide tree-planting exercise in Kakamega on Monday, November 13, Senator Khalwale cautioned the Deputy President against involvement in the sugar sector, a crucial industry for many residents in the region.
Khalwale further urged Deputy President Gachagua to concentrate on issues affecting the Mt Kenya region, specifically mentioning the coffee and tea sectors. He also advised him to leave matters related to the sugar industry to politicians representing Western Kenya.
“It seems the Deputy President is under some illusion that because he is the second in command, he has the license to meddle in local politics to neutralize senior politicians,” remarked Khalwale.
Khalwale further warned Gachagua against using money to influence the political landscape in different Kenyan regions.
Asserting his own political experience, Khalwale reminded the Deputy President that he has four times more experience in politics. The outspoken Senator also emphasized the need for respect for the Western region community, which comprises approximately 7 million people.
“I have four times his experience in politics, and he must respect our community. We are not a small community but one that comprises about 7 million people,” added the Senator.
Khalwale also took the opportunity to highlight his superior academic qualifications compared to Gachagua.
Furthermore, he conveyed a strong message to the Deputy President, stating that he should not expect to succeed President William Ruto in 2032, as a politician from the Western region is set to assume leadership.
“Deputy president, listen to me, whether you like it or not, when Ruto retires as President, a Luhya will take up the mantle,” Khalwale declared.
