Harambee Stars captain Michael Olunga netted two goals, while Masoud Juma, Rooney Onyango, and Benson Omalla each contributed one as Kenya secured a resounding 5-0 victory against Seychelles on Monday night.
The match was heavily one-sided affair, prompting some to lament the team’s missed opportunities.
“We had clear chances to score more than 10,” remarked one observer on social media, highlighting the dominance of the Stars in their second match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
After losing 2-1 to Gabon in their first group game, Harambee Stars started strong and were clearly the better side.
The ease with which Kenya dispatched Seychelles echoed a similar thrashing inflicted by Ivory Coast, who had earlier defeated Seychelles 9-0. This result highlighted the apparent struggle of the island nation against Group F competitors.
After two games, Seychelles lies at the bottom of the group with an inferior goal difference of minus 14.
Coach Engin Firat opted for two changes in the starting lineup from the previous match against Gabon. Eric ‘Marcelo’ Ouma replaced Aboud Omar in the left-back role, while Eric Johanna took the place of Kenneth Muguna.
Firat also introduced new call-ups to the team, Nabi Kibunguchy and Timothy Ouma, just five minutes before the final whistle, allowing them a taste of the victory.
With this win, Kenya now stands at three points in Group F, level with Burundi but holding a superior goal difference of plus four. Meanwhile, Ivory Coast, who secured a 2-0 win against Gambia, leads the group with six points.
Gabon, having triumphed over both Kenya and Burundi, also stands at six points but with an inferior goal difference to Ivory Coast’s.
The next chapter of Kenya’s campaign unfolds in June 2024, as they prepare to face off against Burundi and Ivory Coast consecutively.
