The body of a missing 31-year-old Kenyan woman based in Whitman, Massachusetts was on Wednesday night discovered inside a vehicle at Boston’s Logan Airport.
American police are currently searching Margarete Mbitu’s partner, Kevin Kangethe, a 40-year-old resident of Lowell, who is said to have boarded a flight to Kenya from Boston.
Mbitu was tragically stabbed, and her lifeless body was located in the passenger seat of the vehicle. An arrest warrant has been issued for Kangethe, charging him with the murder of the 31-year-old victim.
The FBI is collaborating with Kenyan authorities to apprehend him.
Mbitu’s family reported her missing on Monday, following her last-known departure from her workplace in Halifax on Monday night. Concerned coworkers launched a social media campaign, sharing flyers and offering prayers for her safe return.
“It’s just very, very unfortunate that somebody would choose to do what they have done. It’s definitely such a great loss to the parents, to her relatives, and to the community at large and I would say to the nation,” said Mbitu’s friend Jane Wambu.
Former FBI special agent Jennifer Coffindaffer has said that agents are likely already in contact with local authorities to locate Kangethe and facilitate his extradition to the United States. She emphasized the presence of an extradition treaty between the United States and Kenya, suggesting a high probability of Kenyan authorities cooperating in this regard.
Mbitu was employed at BAMSI, located in Brockton. In response to the tragic news, the nonprofit organization issued a statement expressing their grief over the loss of an extraordinary young woman. They described Mbitu as warm, caring, and beloved by both her colleagues and the individuals under her care in their group homes.
Mbitu’s family is seeking justice, with Wambu sharing their prayers, stating, “We’re just praying that the Lord may give the family peace and, above all, that her culprit, this person, may be arrested.”
