Following a temporary suspension of operations on Saturday due to heavy rains, the Port of Mombasa is now back in full swing with normal cargo activities having resumed.
In an announcement on Monday, Kenya Railways confirmed the completion of necessary interventions along the Mariakani and Mombasa Terminus sections, which were previously affected by damage.
The statement from Kenya Railways assured that loading and unloading of cargo at the port had recommenced, with efforts underway to minimize any potential delays. Furthermore, Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) passenger train services will continue according to their regular schedule.
“Normalcy has been restored along the stretch, allowing all Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) trains to resume their scheduled operations,” the statement emphasized, signaling the successful conclusion of repair work.
Kenya Railways also underscored that all requisite security and safety precautions had been taken before announcing the resumption of services, ensuring the well-being of both passengers and cargo.
The disruption in operations over the weekend was prompted by adverse weather conditions, including floods, wash-aways, and landslides in Mombasa County. Kenya Railways acknowledged unexpected delays in cargo evacuation between Mombasa and Nairobi, leading to a backlog in cargo delivery to the Port of Mombasa. A landslide in the SGR corridor between Mombasa Terminus and Mariakani had necessitated the temporary closure of that section for freight trains.
The coastal city experienced severe flooding on Friday due to El Nino rains, causing houses to be submerged and rendering roads impassable, particularly in Bamburi, leading to a temporary standstill in businesses.
