Raila Odinga, the leader of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), made a notable appearance at State House in Nairobi on Tuesday evening when he attended the royal banquet in honour of the visiting British Royals.
The banquet was marked by the much-anticipated address by King Charles III during his visit to Kenya.
But the historic speech was not what excited a large section of Kenyans, rather it was the presence of Azimio principal Raila Odinga.
In a moment of televised coverage of the dinner, Raila was seen engaged in a hearty conversation with Opiyo Wandayi, the National Assembly Minority Leader, and Monica Juma, the National Security Advisor.
The former Prime Minister was also spotted socializing with Alfred Mutua, the Cabinet Secretary for Tourism, and Cleophas Malala, the Secretary General of the United Democratic Alliance.
During the event, Cabinet Secretary Mutua was observed making some adjustments to Raila’s coat and pockets while engaging in casual conversation with the veteran politician.
Later on, Raymond Omollo, the Interior Principal Secretary, approached the group consisting of Raila, Wandayi, and Malala. He was also seen engaging in a brief discussion with them.
Raila was also captured later on shaking hands of the British Monarch.
Deputy President Gachagua absent
This public appearance marked Raila’s first visit to State House since President William Ruto assumed office.
The timing of this invitation raises questions, especially with the absence of the Deputy President, Mr. Rigathi Gachagua.
Mr. Gachagua is a vocal critic of Raila Odinga. The DP has been previously quoted saying Raila is planning to destroy Ruto’s government. He solely blames Raila for the rift between President Ruto and former President Uhuru Kenyatta.
Gachagua is currently out of the country in Germany on an official state assignment. The timing of this visit and the presence of Raila at Statehouse Nairobi has sparked curiosity among Kenyans, who are left wondering whether a potential “handshake” is in the works.
The absence of the Deputy President during the British Monarch’s visit to Kenya further adds to the intrigue, leaving observers to ponder whether this was a planned move or a mere coincidence.
Only time will tell!
