A pregnant woman from Kentucky is crediting her Apple Watch with saving her and her baby’s life. Veronica Williams received multiple notifications from her smartwatch indicating an abnormally high heart rate, prompting her to seek immediate medical attention.
Williams, who was in her third trimester, initially ignored the first notification, believing it to be a minor glitch. However, as she began to feel increasingly out of breath and the alerts continued, she knew something was wrong.
“My heart rate was through the roof,” Williams told reporters. “I knew I had to go to the hospital.”
Upon arrival at the emergency room, doctors quickly diagnosed Williams with a rare form of Myocarditis, where the immune system attacks the heart muscle. The condition can be life-threatening, especially for pregnant women.
“We were lucky that Veronica came to us when she did,” said Dr. Sarah Thompson, Williams’ cardiologist. “If she had waited any longer, the outcome could have been much worse.”
Doctors performed an emergency C-section and were able to deliver Williams’ baby safely. Williams herself remained in critical condition for several days but eventually stabilized.
“I am so grateful to my Apple Watch for alerting me to something was wrong,” Williams said. “It literally saved my life and my baby’s life.”
This is not the first time an Apple Watch has been credited with saving a life. In recent years, there have been numerous reports of the smartwatch detecting heart attacks, falls, and other health emergencies, allowing users to seek help before it’s too late.
“Wearable technology like the Apple Watch is playing an increasingly important role in preventative healthcare,” said Dr. David Lee, a cardiologist at the University of California, San Francisco. “By monitoring vital signs and alerting users to potential problems, these devices can help to identify and treat health conditions early, often before symptoms even appear.”
As wearable technology continues to evolve, its potential to improve public health is vast. Devices like the Apple Watch are becoming more sophisticated and capable of detecting an even wider range of health conditions. By incorporating these technologies into our daily lives, we can take proactive steps towards a healthier future.
