The once seemingly unified Azimio La Umoja coalition is facing a major test of its cohesiveness as prominent leaders openly reject the National Dialogue Committee (NADCO) report.
The report, presented on November 25th, 2023, aimed to address pressing national issues through a series of proposed recommendations.
However, dissatisfaction with the report’s content has created a rift within Azimio, with key figures voicing their disapproval and highlighting the coalition’s inability to reach consensus.
Leading the charge against the NADCO report are two prominent Azimio co-principals: Martha Karua and Eugene Wamalwa.
Karua, the leader of the NARC Kenya party, expressed deep disappointment with the report, criticizing its failure to address critical issues like the soaring cost of living, the need for an audit of the 2022 General Election, and the upholding of multiparty democracy.
She further argued that the report prioritized leadership interests over the well-being of citizens, labeling it a “fraud” and a “distracting national smokescreen.”
Similarly, Wamalwa, a key member of the NADCO committee, refused to endorse the report and even declined the associated sitting allowance.
He emphasized the committee’s inadequate focus on the critical issue of the cost of living, stating, “I didn’t and will not append my signature to the NADCO report because I believe we did not do justice to the single most important issue to Kenyans: the cost of living.”
These vocal objections from within Azimio’s leadership have been met with a stern response from the coalition’s spokesperson, Prof. Makau Mutua.
In an interview on Sunday, Mutua issued a strong call to action, stating that Azimio is not a “forced marriage” and urged members who cannot support the NADCO report to consider leaving the coalition.
This ultimatum highlights the brewing internal conflict within Azimio and underscores the potential for a major shakeup within the opposition party.
Adding further complexity to the situation is the contrasting stance of President William Ruto and his ruling Kenya Kwanza coalition.
Ruto has publicly embraced the NADCO report, commending the committee’s efforts and expressing his commitment to implementing its recommendations.
This public endorsement presents a significant challenge for Azimio, as it further emphasizes the coalition’s internal divisions and strengthens the position of the governing party.
As the debate over the NADCO report intensifies and tensions within Azimio continue to simmer, it remains to be seen whether the coalition can overcome this internal rift and maintain its united front.
The outcome of this struggle will have significant implications for Kenyan politics, with the potential to reshape the country’s political landscape in the months and years to come.
