Kenya’s inflation experienced a slight increase to 6.9 percent this month, primarily driven by the escalating costs of transport, housing, electricity, and food.
The latest data from the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) indicates a 0.3 percent growth in the monthly inflation figures, up from 6.6 percent in December 2023.
According to KNBS, the inflationary pressures were fueled by a 10.6 percent increase in the cost of transport, a 9.7 percent rise in housing, water, electricity, gas, and other fuels, and a 7.9 percent uptick in food and non-alcoholic beverages.
The monthly inflation figure is derived from surveys of retail prices for households’ consumption of goods and services. These surveys are conducted in the second and third weeks of the month, collecting data from a sample of outlets located in 50 data collection zones across the country.
