A man wanted for murder in the United States was on Monday night arrested at a night club in Westlands, Nairobi.
Kevin Kangethe Kinyanjui is being sought by the FBI in connection with the murder of Margaret Mbitu between October 30, 2023, and November 4, 2023, in Boston, USA.
Having been on the run since November last year when he fled from the USA to Kenya amid a murder probe, he has consistently denied the allegations in discussions with his family.
The Gigiri police station informed authorities and is awaiting identifiers from the US police to facilitate the suspect’s positive identification. Once identified, officials will collaborate with the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution to initiate the extradition process.
Kenyan detectives received a request from US authorities in November to arrest Kangethe for alleged murder in Massachusetts. The victim’s mother revealed that Margaret was planning to break up with the suspect.
An arrest warrant was issued on November 2, and Margaret’s body was found in her car at Boston’s Logan Airport Central Parking garage. US authorities urged the suspect to surrender, expressing the need for justice for Margaret Mbitu.
Whitman police disclosed that Margaret was last seen leaving work in Halifax around 11 pm on October 30. She was later found murdered, and Kang’ethe, aged 40, allegedly purchased tickets for a flight to Nairobi shortly after her death.
Massachusetts authorities aim to leverage Kenya’s extradition treaty with the US, seeking to bring Kang’ethe to justice. Preliminary evidence from the deceased’s car implicated him as the primary suspect.
Margaret, a 31-year-old nurse and naturalized US citizen, lived with her family in Whitman and worked for Boston Area Multi-Services Inc (Bamsi) in Brockton. Surveillance footage placed her car in Lowell and Chelsea, Massachusetts, on the day before her murder. Her tragic death has left unanswered questions about the circumstances leading to her demise and her partner’s subsequent flight to Kenya.
