The Jubilee Party has issued a cease and desist letter to nominated Member of Parliament Sabina Chege, warning of potential legal action if she fails to comply with the party’s directives.
In the letter addressed to Ms Chege through lawyer Jackson Awele, Jubilee accused the MP of falsely representing herself as the party leader and spokesperson, in violation of court orders.
The party emphasized that former President Uhuru Kenyatta remained the de facto leader, with Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni serving as the official spokesperson.
Ms Chege was explicitly cautioned that legal action would be taken if she persisted in her actions.
The cease and desist directive came shortly after Ms Chege led several Jubilee elected Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) to meet President William Ruto at State House Nakuru. During the meeting, the leaders pledged their support for Ruto’s policies.
The communication from Jubilee accused Chege of propagating policies contrary to the Jubilee constitution, particularly her alliance with President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party.
This dalliance with Kenya Kwanza has irked Jubilee leadership since it diverges from the stance taken by Uhuru and his allies.
“We are accordingly instructed to demand as we hereby do that you cease and desist forthwith from holding yourself out as the party leader of the Jubilee Party and from issuing any communication in the name of or on behalf of the Jubilee Party,” the letter reads in part.
Furthermore, the letter warned of potential contempt of court proceedings if Chege continued to defy the court orders. It also cautioned individuals associating with her in violation of the directives.
“In so doing, you have publicly misused the party’s insignia in a manner deliberately calculated to mislead and confuse members of the party and the public at large into joining and promoting the policies of another political party and coalition – United Democratic Alliance and Kenya Kwanza Coalition respectively,” the letter stated.
Ms Chege and former Kieni East MP have been at crossroads with a faction of Jubilee party led by Jeremiah Kioni over leadership of the party. Both Ms Chege and Kioni have separately laid claim to leadership of the party.
